Temnostethus tibialis Reuter, 1888 : nouvelle espèce pour la France (Heteroptera, Anthocoridae, Anthocorinae)

MS2026_07_CALLOT_Figure01_web.jpgExtended abstract  ̶  A long-term inventory of the insect fauna of the Botanical Garden of the University of Strasbourg and its highly urbanized surroundings has been conducted for approximately three decades. By summer 2026, 1,144 species of Coleoptera, 225 Heteroptera and 95 Auchenorrhyncha had been recorded, including several taxa new to Alsace, France, Europe or science.
On 24 May 2026, an ethanol-baited interception trap, operating for about twenty years in the technical area of the Garden, collected a specimen of Temnostethus tibialis Reuter, 1888 (Heteroptera, Anthocoridae). Anthocoridae are rarely captured by this method at the site. The specimen is sub-brachypterous and differs from the locally more frequent Temnostethus gracilis Horváth, 1907 and Temnostethus pusillus (Herrich-Schäffer, 1835) by the combination of a pale second antennal segment with darkened extremities, conspicuous dorsal pubescence, a relatively long rostrum and a more robust habitus. These characters agree with published descriptions of T. tibialis. The species is very rarely recorded in Europe, with published occurrences from the British Isles, southeastern Europe and, more recently, the Netherlands and Belgium. Although France is listed with a question mark in the Catalogue of Palearctic Heteroptera, no substantiated French record could be traced, and the species is absent from the current French reference list.
The Strasbourg specimen therefore appears to constitute the first documented record of T. tibialis in France. The species has been associated with lichens and mosses on deciduous trees, particularly oaks, which is consistent with the capture site beneath a large oak. This record further illustrates the value of long-term standardized sampling for documenting poorly known insects in highly urbanized environments.
