BSHNEC2026_83_art3Extended abstract – The family Tipulidae (Diptera) comprises over 4,000 described species worldwide and represents a potentially valuable indicator group for forest wetland quality. The tipulid fauna of Alsace remains poorly documented, with no systematic regional inventory published to date for either the Bas-Rhin or Haut-Rhin departments. We report the first record of Tipula (Schummelia) variicornis (Schummel, 1833) (Diptera, Tipulidae) from Alsace (France, Grand Est), based on a single adult male observed in the Guirbaden forest (Mollkirch, Bas-Rhin) at 48.5110°N, 7.3577°E, 270 m a.s.l., on 4 May 2025. Identification was based on photographs of key diagnostic characters and examination of the genitalia. The specimen was found at the margin of a small, permanently flowing forest stream with dense hygrophilous riparian vegetation (ferns, horsetails and mesohygrophilous herbs), within a mature Norway spruce plantation (Picea abies). This habitat is consistent with the known ecology of the species, a semiaquatic cranefly associated with forest streams and headwater springs. Consultation of the Catalogue of the Craneflies of the World (CCW), GBIF, Faune-Grand Est and other sources yielded no previous record of the species from Alsace. This occurrence extends the documented range of the species in France and highlights the faunistic importance of small Vosges Forest streams for the regional tipulid fauna.
Key words – Diptera, forest stream, Tipulidae, Vosges Mountains.
